Vertical Shmups

Large numbers of enemy characters programmed to behave in an easily predictable manner are typically featured. These enemies may behave in a certain way dependent on their type, or attack in formations that the player can learn to predict. The basic gameplay tends to be straightforward with many varieties of weapons. Characters can instantly change direction with no inertia, and projectiles move in a straight line at constant speeds. The player's character can collect "power-ups" which may afford the character greater protection, an "extra life", health, shield, or upgraded weaponry.

Cave's insect-themed, fantasy shooter casts you as a princess who battles giant creepy crawlies across five vertically scrolling stages. Cave is a shmup developer that has many hits in its catalog, with Deathsmiles being one of the company's finest. Deathsmiles is a supernatural shooter in which you play as one of five gothic lolitas who defend their land from a demon invasion using familiars and intense, enemy-wrecking magic. Cute 'em ups feature brightly colored graphics depicting surreal settings and enemies. Some cute 'em ups may employ overtly sexual characters and innuendo. This collection includes eight of Konami’s classic coin-op titles, with seven of them being shoot-em-ups.

My database initially had about 20 fields used to indicate different mechanics such as chaining, movement types etc. Once a new mechanic was discovered, a new field needed to be added to the database, causing a need to go back through most of the games that I had already played to make sure I hadn't missed it in the analysis. These levels were called screens and increased in difficulty as the player progressed through the game.

But I have so many non-Tate games on my backlog that I can't justify it. However, if they decide to finally release Radiant Silvergun for Switch, I will finally buy a Flip Grip and every game on this list. Especially just the horizontal-scrolling games that it doesn't work with.

Shoot 'em up video games is a sub-genre of the shooter genre of video games. Shoot 'em ups, have the player control a lone character whose objective is to destroy waves upon waves of enemies while dodging their attacks. What amazes me about those games is that once I haven't played them for awhile it is always fun to play 2 or 3 levels again. Collecting the cards and ship parts in Reloaded is a fun long term project. My favorite ongoing series has probably got to be the Parodius series , which many American gamers won’t be familiar with because we never received a single title in the Infinite Dragoon US. These titles are colorful, bubbly cartoon versions of a shmup that tend to have animals, large breasted anime girls and lots of US political jokes . In addition, it tends to parody the Gradius series while still retaining the power-up system and much of the challenge required to succeed . Just like the Gradius series, Parodiushas made appearances in arcades and on most major consoles from the Famicom to the Playstation Portable.
